"It was Christmas time when I drew ‘THE ANGEL OF DEATH’ in the great halls of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, returning to her every day — a strange kind of devotion, like visiting someone entombed in the museum’s silence. The icy metropolis glowed softly and every shadow felt a little more enchanted, a little more haunted with that peculiar stillness the season always brings.

One morning the sky split open and Manhattan drowned in rain, and with no umbrella I used my drawing board as a shield — holding it above me like a makeshift roof, the paper already softening, absorbing the storm. When the guards saw me they tried to usher me forward, but I refused — until the entire line insisted, shouting for me to get out of the rain and protect the artwork.

So the drawing carries New York City’s weather in its bones — rainwater woven into the paper, a faint warping of the page like a whispered scar. By day I shaped her in the museum’s marble hush, by night I finished her in a hotel room high above Central Park, the city glittering below me like a restless constellation. Night after night, moonlight slid across the paper as I drew her quiet, skeletal face — an apparition that felt less like something I created and more like something I summoned." - KL
